Spreewald Feldmann’s original production facilities are located in the heart of the Spreewald biosphere reserve. The processed gherkins are all grown in areas within the Spreewald and are handled immediately on location after harvesting without being transported over long distances.
Gherkin cultivation in the Spreewald has a long-standing tradition that dates back several centuries. The region has been known for its expertise in growing and pickling cucumbers since the 17th century. The local farmers have developed specific techniques and knowledge that have been passed down through generations, contributing to the high quality and distinct flavour of Spreewald gherkins.
The Spreewald region benefits from unique geographic conditions that are well-suited for gherkin cultivation. It is characterised by a network of small canals and waterways, created by the river Spree, which create a humid microclimate. The fertile soil in the area, enriched by the river’s sediments, provides an ideal environment for growing cucumbers.
Gherkins from the Spreewald have become an iconic symbol of the region and are highly valued by locals and visitors alike. The tradition of gherkin cultivation and pickling is deeply ingrained in the local culture, and the region celebrates its gherkin heritage with festivals and events dedicated to this culinary specialty.
